Members of Trident Swim Club will be taking part in the annual Ian Daly Swim a Mile with a Smile Event next Friday evening 29 March in Aura Leitrim Leisure. This event aims to raise funds in aid of Child Cancer Care and to date the swim has raised over €407,000 for the Cancer Research Unit in Our Lady’s Hospital for Sick Children, Crumlin and for Barretstown Camp for seriously ill children.

Brian and Laura Daly started the sponsored swim in memory of their son Ian, who died in 2003 aged 11 as a result of a particularly aggressive brain tumour. Ian was a very enthusiastic swimmer and a member of the Viking Swimming Club in Palmerstown, Dublin. This is the 10th year of the event and it is open to swimmers of all abilities, from novices to club swimmers, who can either complete the mile long swim individually, or as a team, sharing the 64 lengths between them.

Trident Swim Club members will be completing their swim during training on Friday evening, from 7pm to 8pm and Aura will also be making 2 lanes available from 8pm to 10pm for any other swimmers who wish to support this event. Please show your support for this event by sponsoring club members or by taking part in the swim. Please contact Samantha Weaver on 086 859 4497 for sponsorship cards.

Congratulations to Trident Club members Stephen Hughes, Ellen Hughes and Carina Hughes, all of whom qualified this weekend to take part in the Roscommon Community Games County Final and also to Trident swimmer Laura Conlon, who qualified to take part in the Leitrim Community Games County Final scheduled to take place on 21 April.

Other club members going forward to the County Finals for Roscommon include Gillian Brennan, Aoife McCormack, Gabriella Weaver, Luke Weaver and Robin Weaver for Elphin; Izzy Butler will represent Douglas Hyde and Hettie Cahill is going forward for Strokestown. In Leitrim, Eoin Guckian, and Rhian Haf Rees-Dole will also go forward to the County Finals. We wish all our members the best of luck.

Trident Club member and National Irish Squad member Gabriella Weaver returns from the Connacht Squad Training Camp in Barcelona next Friday and will be heading to the National Aquatic Centre in Dublin for a further week of intensive training with the National Squad. With qualifying times in no fewer than seven events for the Irish Long Course Nationals at the end of April, we wish Gabriella the best of luck at this prestigious event.

With Community Games County Finals so close on the horizon, training for club members continues during the Easter Holidays so please ensure attendance at all sessions to maximise training opportunities prior to the Finals. Training over the next few weeks will be focussed on competition technique, including starts, turns and finishes.

Membership of Trident Swim Club is open to all and information on joining is available from Club Secretary Samantha Weaver on 086 859 4497. Find us on Facebook at Trident Swim Club (Carrick on Shannon).
