Athletes set for All-Ireland Schools Finals

A number of Leitrim athletes qualified at the Connacht Schools Championships in Athlone to represent Connacht in the Aviva All Ireland Schools Championships in Tullamore next Saturday.

A number of Leitrim athletes qualified at the Connacht Schools Championships in Athlone to represent Connacht in the Aviva All Ireland Schools Championships in Tullamore next Saturday.

In the Junior category Mohill Community College have two competitors, Dearbhaile Beirne and Aisling McNabola in the 1200m Walk. Eilish O’Dowd of Ballinamore PPS qualified in the 1500m as did Ryan O’Rourke of the same school in the 800m. Gemma McLoughlin of Lough Allen College qualified by finishing third in the discus.

In the Intermediate section Michelle Beirne of Mohill CC won the 2000m Walk in Connacht and David Bruen of Carrick Community School won the 1500m steeplechase. Cathal McElgunn of Carrick CS qualified in the 400m as did Dylan Mimna of Carrigallen VS in the 2000m Walk. Louise Mulvaney represents St Clare’s Manorhamilton, in the 300m hurdles.

At senior level Leitrim have Eanna Madden of Mohill Community College who took second in both the 200m and 400m in Athlone.

An athlete from Mohill Community College who took third in the Intermediate hurdles in Athlone was Molly Crossley but only two qualify for the All Ireland in the shorter events.

Fixtures: Because of it’s proximity to the Leitrim Womens’ 5K race in Ballinamore the Open Sports usually held on Bank Holiday Monday will not take place on that date this year. However events for younger age athletes will be held in Ballinamore later in the year. The Festival races will be held on Wednesday August 15. The next Connacht event is the Under 9,10 and 11 Team competitions in Galway on Saturday week
