Mohill’s Stephen Flynn, currently boxing out of Cavan Boxing Club with a return appearance at the Angered Centrum Box Cup in Gotenberg, Sweden in November.
The Mohill native was a well known footballer with the hometown club and began his boxing career with Drumsna club before work committments took him to Cavan town.
A hook up with the Cavan club has seen his career develope and at present he is not far from competing with the Nations High performance fighters and entry to the Elite Seniors in the New Year is already under consideration. To date Stephen has picked up an Ulster intermediate title, a silver medal in Sweden last year and victory with an Irish select in Canada.
In Gotenberg last year, he took three wins in three days and was decidely unlucky to drop a majority drcision to Jacob Muhammed Hasib after a bruising 75 kilo final. In June Flynn defeated the fancied Darren Hockaday in Ontario.
The trip to Sweden gives the Mohill boxer an opportunity of some much needed ring action and experience before next months Irish Intermediates and whatever comes next. However success comes at a price and travel to international competition does not come cheap so it is hoped that local sports fans will get behind one of the counties best fighters with support his fund raising efforts or sponsorship for his trip.
Stephen has been preparing diligently for his contests and after helping top pro Andrew Murray with sparring before Murray’s successful ring return in August hopes are high that he will enjoy another busy and successful season.
