The Community Games Swimming Finals took place over the weekend at Athlone Regional Sports Centre and there were a number of outstanding performances from the Leitrim swimmers who had qualified for the National Finals.

Individual participants must first compete at area finals then at their County finals and the Leitrim swimmers produced a series of excellent performances to bring home three gold medals, two silvers and two bronzes from Athlone.

On Saturday ,the O’Hara boys from Kinlough had a superb day bringing back three medals to the county. Eanna O’Hara finished first to claim gold in the U16 freestyle while Odhran O’Hara also won gold in the U12 breaststroke.

The O’Hara medal haul was completed when their younger brother John James won bronze the the U8 freestyle B Final to complete a remarkable day and perhaps a unique piece of Leitrim history with three members of the same family claiming individual medals from the national finals.

Kinglouh’s Gero Gilmartin, son of Melvin Gaels manager Liam, finished third to win bronze in the U12 freestyle.

On Sunday in was the turn of the girls to compete. Viktoria Weinert from Carrick-on-Shannon won gold in the U12 breaststroke, Carrie McDaid from Manorhamilton (Dromahair) won silver in U14 backstroke and Liadán Ruddy from Kinlough won silver in U10 girls freestyle.

A massive well done to all the swimmers who represented their County so well.
