One of the final triathlons of this year’s Vodafone National Series takes place in Lough Key Forest Park on Sunday September 6.
The sprint distance event has a 750m swim over to the scenic Castle Island and back, a 23 km bike leg around the lake followed by a 5km run through the new and improved park paths.
Lough Key has consistently proved to be one of the more popular Triathlon events on the calendar and has always managed to attract a quality field with well known names such as Gavin Noble, Kevin Thornton, Jennifer O’Connell and Laura Tighe topping the results in recent years.
As well as the high standard of the event organisation Lough Key has also become renowned for the friendliness of both the club and the very important marshals, without whom we could not run this high standard event.
Triathlons, and Lough Key in particular, are a very spectator-friendly sport with a lot of the excitement and focus tending to be around the transition area in front of the lake where the athletes make the change from swim to bike to run. We would love to see any locals who are around on the day come down to the park to cheer on the athletes who will range from top athletes to those who are trying the sport for the very first time.
This year’s event is sponsored generously once again by Waterways Ireland and in addition to our substantial prize pot and well renowned goodie bags we have impressive trophies for the fastest male and female bike splits.
New to Lough Key this year will be two new perpetual trophies for the fastest swim splits in memory of club member John Cloughley who passed away earlier this year.
So whether you are a top class triathlete bidding to get your name on one of our high quality bespoke marble perpetual trophies from Feelystone or a beginner looking for a great venue and friendly welcome come to Lough Key for a great day’s racing.
