The members of Carrick Rowing Club had an early start last Saturday morning as they travelled to Tullamore for the first event of the 2012/2013 season.
The athletes competed in various time trials over the two and a half thousand meter course and ended the day with a number of wins in the different age categories. Caroline Kelly began her final season as a junior 18 sculler with an impressive win, setting a marker for the year to come in one of the most closely fought categories in national rowing. Kate McCabe was equally successful on the day in the women’s junior 16 scull category showing a continued improvement in her rowing. In the women’s junior 15 single scull, Laureen Gannon beat one of the largest fields on the day including a number of other competitors from Carrick to bring home her first single win.
Finally, Tom McCabe begins another year as he completed the last with a comprehensive win in the junior 14 single scull. Tom had over a minute to spare from his nearest rival in another large field. Well done to Caroline, Kate, Laureen, Tom and to all those who competed on the day, including Oisin Griffin who made his competitive debut for the club on Saturday.
Club open days for new members continue each Saturday morning at 11 for the month of October, and having already gained a number of promising new recruits, we welcome anyone looking for a challenge in a great environment. The club now enjoys a quiet spell until Neptune Head of the River to be held on Blessington Lake, Co. Wicklow in November.
