Clive wins Last Turkey in the Shop race

Over 100 runners and walkers turned out for a very successful Last Turkey in the Shop 5 mile road race in Carrick-on-Shannon with Clive Glancy of Carrick-on-Shannon first across the line after a tough battle with Sligo’s Richard Gorman.

Prizes were awarded on the basis of the top runner at each mile mark with Graham Allen, Clive Glancy, Richard Gorman, Seamus Somers and John Keenehan taking home the turkeys. The women’s race was won impressively by Strokestown’s Emma Donlon ahead of Carrick AC’s Siobhan Murtagh in second. Glancy was first across the finish line in a time of 27.41, just two seconds ahead of Gorman with Seamus Somers in third in 28.45.

Revised Fixture list

With the opening of the new International Indoor athletics facility at Athlone IT next month an exciting Indoor season is looming for all planning to take part. Athletes used to the long trip to Nenagh will have their competitions nearer home and in surrounding radically different to what they were accustomed to at the Tipperary venue which has served Connacht and National athletics so well for almost a quarter of a century. The new venue is right beside the outdoor track which has been used for club, schools and Community Games athletics for the past few years.

To facilitate television coverage of some events there have been a few alterations made to the early season fixture list as was published last week. The revised list is as follows:

Thursday January 24: Connacht Schools CC Regional Sligo

Saturday January 26: Indoor Combined Events (all grades) Athlone

Sunday January 27: AAI Indoor Games Athlone IT

Sunday February 3: All Ireland “B” Cross Country Championships Derry

Saturday February 9: Masters Indoors Athlone

Sunday February 10: Junior & Under 23 Championships Athlone

February 16/17: National Senior Indoors Athlone IT

Wednesday February 20: Connacht Schools Cross Country Sligo

Sunday February 24: All Ireland Inter Club CC Tullamore

Sunday March 3: Connacht Indoor Championships Athlone IT

Sunday March 10: Connacht Indoor (Hurdles, LJ, HJ, Shot) Claremorris

March 23/24: National Juvenile Indoors Athlone IT.

The Leitrim Indoor Championships are likely to be held in January and other fixtures to be added will include road races and the Primary Schools Sports Hall Athletics Competition to be held in conjunction with the Leitrim Sports Partnership.

Fenagh 5Km race

Fenagh GAA 5K Run/Walk

Anyone looking to work off the Christmas Dinner can head to Fenagh on Saturday, December 29, when Fenagh St. Caillin’s host a fundraising 5Km Road Race and Walk. The event is in aid of the Park Development fund and is being run instead of the usual draw. The race will start from Pairc Seain O Laodain at 12 noon with an entry fee of 10 per participant. Everyone welcome.

Mohill & District AC 
Congratulations to Club Athlete Laura Reynolds who was awarded the overall Sports Person Award at the recent Sports Awards in the Landmark Hotel, well deserved Laura, you are a great ambassador for Mohill & District AC, County and Country. Also well done to Dearbhaile Beirne who won the Youth Sports person of the year award. Both of these Athletes were well deserving recepitants. Club training has stoped for the Christmas break and will resume mid January, all members will be informed when training is r esuming in the New Year. The Club are hosting “Goal Mile” run on Sunday January 6, at 1pm starting from grounds of Marian College. Wishing all our members a very happy Christmas and prosperous New Year, hope Santa is good to all.

Carrick-on-Shannon AC

Well done to Chris and Graham and all their team on organising a very successful Last Turkey in the Shop 5 Mile Road Race last Sunday. Clive Glancy crossed the line first, carrying his penguin to victory while John Keeneghan, Siobhan Murtagh and Graham Allen also won turkeys on the day. Over 100 runners and walkers completed the testing course. Thanks to everyone who helped on the day to make the event such a success.

We take a break for the Christmas and New Year holidays. Training for Primary & Post Primary will resume early in the New Year. We wish all our members and their families a very happy Christmas and a Merry New Year and we look forward to seeing them all in 2013.

Donegal 5K

Tir Chonaill Athletics Club Jingle Bells 5k Run/Walk in Donegal Town will be held on Sunday, December 23, at 10.30 am. Registration at the Abbey Voc. School from 9.30 am. Entry fee is €7 with numerous spot prizes and all proceeds to local charities.
