Golfers in Carrick-on-Shannon had a real treat last Friday afternoon when European Solheim Cup captain Alison Nicholas conducted a clinic as part of her visit to the club.

The European Captain was visiting Carrick as part of the campaign to promote the Solheim Cup which will be held from September 23-25, at Killeen Castle, Co Meath and she is anxious to ensure that the European Ladies team have the same sort of support that made the Ryder Cup visit to the K-Club such a success.

Speaking to the Observer, the former US Open champion said “I basically here to promote the Solheim Cup and get people to come out and support the European team. Hopefully, they will be the 15th club, 13th man advantage, just like the K-Club when the Ryder Cup came over here.

“That crowd had a big influence on the match in the Ryder Cup and lifting the players to victory. I know that we have got Solheim Cup ambassadors in the clubs all over Ireland and that is where people can buy their tickets from and they have been a great support.

“All the ambassadors throughout Ireland have been fantastic, trying to sell tickets and get the Irish public motivated to come and support the European team. We want home advantage and we want the public cheering for Europe as much as possible.”
