Leitrim’s two race-walking Internationals had a very satisfactory day at the International 20K race-walk in Naumburg, Germany, on Sunday last.

They were part of a three member Irish team who along with team manager Ray Flynn took part in the event which carried Olympic qualification for the 20K event.

Colin Griffin had his best race since finishing eleventh in the European 50K event in Barcelona in 2010 while Laura took a minute off her previous best and again achieved the “B” Standard.

Unfortunately only “A” standards will be accepted by the Olympic Council of Ireland and with Olive Loughnane already having the ”A” standard it would not be possible to enter a “B” standard athlete anyhow.

Colin’s time was 84.46 which was his best for 20K for a few years. He took fourth place behind the German winner Christopher Linke who finished in 1:20.55 ahead of the experienced Andre Hohne of Germany (1:21.24) and Hagen Pohle of Germany who was just ahead of Colin in 1:24.45.

Jamie Costin of Waterford finished eighth in 1:25.24.

Laura was also fourth in 1:34.42 in a race won by Sabine Kranze of Germany in 1:33.02. Both Colin and Laura have been selected for the World Cup in Saransk, Russia, on the weekend of May 12/13.
