The second leg of the Leitrim Road League will be held in Ballinamore at 2.00 on Sunday next, April 14.
The second race will, by it’s timing, serve both to bring to conclusion the winter season for athletes and also to provide a valuable introduction to the new summer season where the emphasis will be on track and field competition.
The programme for the next number of weeks will include the Leitrim Primary Schools Track & Field Championships later this month, the Connacht Schools Northern Region Championships on April 30, Leitrim, Connacht and National Championships and both the County and National Community Games. These, along with some Open Sports and Roadraces provide numerous competition opportunities between now and mid August.
The first leg of the Road League was held in Manorhamilton in January and the performances there will be added to those in Ballinamore to provide overall results. Sunday’s races will be held along the canal with headquarters in the community centre nearby.
The events are as follows: Under 10 (born 2004 or later) 600m Girls; 800m Boys; Under 12 (born 2002 or 2003) 800m Girls; 1000m Boys; Under 14 (born 2000 or 2001) 1000m Girls; 1500m Boys
Under 17 (born 1997 or later) 1200m Girls; 2000m Boys; Over 17 Ladies 1500m; Men 5000m
Teams are of four to count for Under 10, 12, and 14 with three to count at the higher ages. As many as wish can run in each event and the best overall club will receive the O’Beirne Trophy, first competed for in 1974.
The short races and team competition provides an ideal opportunity for new runners to make their debut and are particularly suited to runners having in mind to compete in schools competition later in the month.
