Double gold for Cathal as nine athletes take gold in Athlone

There were some impressive Leitrim performances at the Connacht AAI Under 13 to Under 19 Championships held in pleasant conditions in Athlone on Sunday last and quite a few qualified for the All Ireland next month.

There were some impressive Leitrim performances at the Connacht AAI Under 13 to Under 19 Championships held in pleasant conditions in Athlone on Sunday last and quite a few qualified for the All Ireland next month.

Carrick-on-Shannon AC produced a number of winners and placed athletes with Cathal McElgunn taking first in the U19 100m and 200m as well as second in the 400m.

Joanna Duignan won the U18 200m and ran a very impressive 800m to take second behind the GCH Schools International Alannah Lally.

Ciara Dowd won the U18 Javelin and was second in the Discus. Gerard O’Donnell ran a fine race to take the senior 400m while Callum Whelan won the U16 Javelin and took second in the Discus.

Stephen McDermott won the Under 16 High Jump while Brian Finn won the U15 Long Jump and was second in the High Jump.

Ellis Conway was second in the U13 Javelin, Elise Bruen second in the U16 800m and third in the 200m while Christina Beirne took third in the U16 100m. Tom McCable also qualified with fourth place in the U-15 Long Jump.

Dearbhaile Beirne of Mohill & District AC was an easy winner of the U16 Walk as well as taking second in the 250m Hurdles and Long Jump. Eoin Gaffey of the same club impressed in the U14 Walk. Michelle Beirne won the U19 Walk and was fourth in the 200m.

Vincent Sweeney of North Leitrim was fifth in the U14 1500m, missing All Ireland qualification by one place.

Laura O’Dowd of Ballinamore won the Under 19 400m and 800m while Grainne Griffin (U18 3000m), Ciara McGoldrick (U14 Shot) and Sibeal Reynolds (U14 Long jump) all took silver medals.
