What an amazing couple of weeks we have just had. Up until last Saturday we have had no rain for seventeen days. I would not be aware of this statistic, but for a very simple everyday task as going to the post office.

The Last Cast - Jarlaith Gallagher

What an amazing couple of weeks we have just had. Up until last Saturday we have had no rain for seventeen days. I would not be aware of this statistic, but for a very simple everyday task as going to the post office.

I was waiting in line and it was very busy. The queue was literally creating a spiral within the small confines of the office. The man behind me told the queue that it had not rained in 17 days and that it was “Shocking”. Nobody said anything. As I was directly beside this man, all eyes took me to be the orators’ friend. I did not know him. However with all eyes on me I just said “The rain hasn’t gone away you know, its just we wear more rain resistant clothing these days”. It was an innocent statement but it sparked off an interesting conversation. A bit part of the conversation dwelt on the subject ‘Mayfly is up on Lough Arrow” A fantastic reason for going to the Post Office. The Mayfly is up!

“Shannon Tackle “Goes right for Ollie

I was out on Lough Rowan for the “Shannon Tackle” competition Sunday last. It was a perfect conditions day. With a nice wave, powered by an intermittent southwesterly wind, which had fish chasing the slick lines. There was a lot of terrestrial fly life being blown onto the lake and this observation obviously was clearly taken up by eventual winner Ollie Gallagher who had nine fish on the day. Ollie is a member of the fishing mad Gallagher Clan in Ballinamore who at this stage could possibly open up their own tackle shop with their consistent success in this competition over the years! Well done to the winners and to everyone else that were not so successful. A huge thank you goes to Mr. Terry Mann, owner of” Shannon Tackle” Jamestown who so kindly sponsored the event. Rossinver Angling

I got a lovely email from the Rossinver Angling club during the week. It was to inform me of the results of their annual league competition. There was a very good turnout on such a terribly windy day and fish were hard caught. This clubs is doing amazing things for recreational angling in Leitrim so; watch this space for more exciting news on this very proactive club and what they are doing in the effort to put Leitrim on the “World Map” top destinations for anglers.

Next article will be on Guides\ Ghillies. Are they worth it? Just how important is it to have a local in the boat? Send me your thoughts on this subject on iarlaith66@gmail.com until next time, tight lines
