Fifty years ago on this Wednesday the first activity of what was to be the very successful Ballinamore Athletic Club took place.

On the afternoon of Wednesday October 21, 1964, thirty nine boys, almost half the then total student number, took part in a race over a mile and a half in what was then the Ballinamore Show field at the top of Church Street.

Two similar races were held on the following two Wednesdays and on Sunday November 8, four of the more prominent runners, who had emerged from the races, made their debut in a roadrace in Kenagh promoted by Lanesboro based Bank official and national marathon champion Noel Henry who in subsequent years served as Manager of the National Irish Bank in Drumshanbo.

Ballinamore AC will commence the celebration of fifty years activity this Saturday when it hosts the Leitrim AAI Cross Country Championships at St Felim’s Grounds and there will be a number of similar activities over the next nine months in a very exciting year for the club.
