Ducky Derby: The winners of the Duck Race held in Battlebridge on Sunday morning were 1st Bernard Murray, Carrick-on-Shannon, 2nd Mike Brown, Sligo, 3rd Alana Moorehouse, Wexford. The LPA wish to congratulate the lucky winners and a big thank you to all who contributed and those who sold lines. A special thank you to the person who included the third prizewinner Alana Moorehouse in the draw. Alana lives in Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford. She is now two and a half years old and like all young children of this age, Alana loves nothing more than playing on the swings, dressing up and having fun with her older siblings. She is a lovely little girl but unlike most two year olds, Alana is unable to walk, having been born with cerebal palsy.

She is a lovely little girl but unlike most two year olds, Alana is unable to walk, having been born with cerebal palsy.

Alana’s family heard six months ago about a groundbreaking surgery now available in Bristol Frenchay Hospital in the UK which has the potential to improve Alana’s mobility and possibly enable her to walk. After researching all the facts in relation to the surgery, Alana is a suitable candidate for the operation. However, the surgery is expensive and her family who are very well known in the pool circuit need to raise €60,000 to get her there. Once three quarters of the money has been raised, a date will be set for the surgery.

A number of organisations have pledged their support including the Leitrim Pool Association and Special Olympics Ireland. In conversation over the phone with Alana’s mum, Majella this correspondent was told that €35,000 has been raised to date. Indeed Majella was full of praise for Niall Sweeney who organised and raised €1250 towards the cause. More details are on Facebook titled “Alana’s Dream” or you can contribute of any of the officials of the LPA or Alana’s Dream bank account no 40006053 sort code 93-34-14 or contact Alana’s mum, Majella on 087-2832134.
