Drumshanbo ease past Tallaght
Drumshanbo’s top boys volleyball team eased to their fourth straight win and into the semi-final with a big win over the Irish speaking Dublin school.
Drumshanbo VS beat Colaiste De hIde Tallaght 25-11 25 12
Drumshanbo wasted no time in racing into an early 7-2 lead in this match where Shane Gillespie set up Brendan McCormack for a variety of winners, followed by service winners from McCormack. Jamie Christie piled on the misery with his serves backed up by a powerful spike from first time starter Gary Regan.
At 20-7 Tallaght rallied briefly but Diarmuid McKiernan, as always, was feeding in their serves for counter attacks. The set ended with captain Shane McNama in top form with blocks and dumps on a Gillespie run of serves and aces on his own serve.
Drumshanbo took a risk in the 2nd serve by withdrawn their first six. Tallaght had lost their first set in their previous game and had come back to beat Thurles. Also when Drumshanbo had done this before they had lost the set.
A repeat looked a distinct possibility when Tallaght came from 4-7 to level at 7-7.
But there the contest ended. Niall Sorohan, already showing his presence with commanding calls, went on a long run of serves. Michael Foley began to dominate the net. Shane Walsh already responsible for aces, set up Barry McNama to spike. When Foley went to the back, Ryan Heron allowed no comeback for Tallaght with winning blocks.
Finally Shane Flynn served the winner. Job well done, but like the B team, they know that there will be a big step up for the semi-final.
Serves; Gillespie 4, McCormack 6, Christie 3, Regan 1, McKiernan 3, S. McNama 5, Sorohan 7, Foley 2, Walsh 4, B. McNama 5, Heron 2, Flynn 2
Cadette boys seeding
Drumshanbo cadettes surprising top
A totally inexperienced Drumshanbo cadette boys volleyball team came from behind against favourites Kiltimagh to top the seeding group and qualify for cadette “A” for the 24th consecutive year.
Last year’s cadette subs Alan McTigue placings and spikes and a top class block by Barry McNama to put Drumshanbo 23-22 might have been hoped for. But, the setting of Ashley Keaveney and Wayne Reynolds and the variety of winners from Kevin Moran were a revelation.
Drumshanbo led 3-0,trailed 4-6, led 9-7 and trailed again. Level at 12,13 and 14 Kiltimagh raced ahead 19-16, 20-17 and 22-21 before Drumshanbo overhauled them. In the other games the serves of Owen Dolan, Ciaran Walsh, Michael McCormack’s blocks Fergal McWeeney’s variety and sets from Thomas Lavin and Caleb Duffy showed the strength of the panel.
Drumshanbo Bs were not expected to feature strongly against all the “A” teams and they will feel well pleased with their results. Colm McLoughlin aced, Michel Rynn did his special dig. Conor Glynn, Conor Prior and Patrick Meehan had service runs. Alex Bziukievicz, Diarmuid Beirne Liam Brady and Darren Earley covered well and Joseph Baxter and Declan Kelly contributed to overall play. They also pushed Kiltimagh to the limit in the longest set of the day.
