Leitrim athletes were in action over the weekend with Olympian Laura Reynolds making a successful return to competition while North Leitrim’s Liam Feely claimed a bronze medal at the Irish Universities Track & Field Championships in Cork last Saturday.

At home, North Leitrim won the O’Beirne Trophy for the best overall club in the Leitrim Road Race League but it was the return to competition of Laura Reynolds that will garner the most attention. In her first major race since the London Olympics, the Mohill & District AC walker finished fifth in the 20K event at the European Athletics Association Permit Meeting in Podebrady, Czech Republic on Saturday last.

Her time of 1:34.07 was her third fastest over the distance and marks a very satisfactory opening of her racing season.

In Cork, Liam Feely proved strongest in the battle for the bronze medal in the 10,000m race at the Irish Universities Championships. Running for the University of Limerick, Liam came home in a time of 31.52.42 with Senior international John Travers of Athlone IT winning in a time of 30.36.46 seconds while Liam was just behind 1,500m international Paul Robinson of DCU who ran 31.46.

Ballinamore AC’s Laura O’Dowd was desperately unlucky to miss out on a medal in the Women’s 800m as, running in the colours of Athlone IT, she finished fourth in a time of 2.20.53, just 0.28 behind the bronze and 0.83 from silver. Laura also finished sixth in the 1,500m final in a time of 4.58.55.

North Leitrim AC won the O’Beirne Trophy for the best overall club when the Second Leg of the Leitrim Road League was held in wet conditions in Ballinamore on Sunday last.
