Leitrim VEC Briefs
The following items were discussed at the monthly Leitrim VEC meeting in The Bush Hotel, Carrick-on-Shannon on October 23.
Mohill Playing Field
There was a very warm welcome for the funding of €80,000 from the Department of Education to develop the Mohill Community College playing field at the recent meeting. Acting CEO Martin Fallon said the Department were awarding the grant based on the terms that it is a “once off and final payment.” The members all agreed to the terms of the grant. Cllr Enda Stenson exclaimed it was “wonderful news” as did the rest of the members. Former CEO John Blunnie and current Acting CEO Martin Fallon were both complimented on their work to secure this funding. Mr Fallon said three quotes will be required for the project.
Youth mental health initiative
Leitrim VEC have pledged their support to a new youth mental health initiative in the region, headed by Youth Officer Trevor Sweetman. The VEC heard that project is looking to set up a meeting place and interactive programme for teenagers locally, similar to the Jigsaw youth cafe in Galway. Leitrim VEC joins Sligo VEC, HSE, Leitrim partnership and other groups in the research project.
Carrigallen VS
The major extension at Carrigallen Vocational School and addendum works are expected to commence early 2013. Planning permission has been granted and e-tenders have been submitted.
PE Teachers
Cllr Enda Stenson queried the Physical Education policy nationwide. He asked was the hiring of PE teachers up to individual schools or is there a nationwide scheme to promote exercise. Acting CEO Martin Fallon said the VEC are given a teacher allocation each year and the schools can decide how to use their allocation. He said the VEC have one PE teacher but to employ others would mean having to give up exam subjects. Cllr Stenson said there was “no national thinking.” Mr Fallon said that in Leitrim teachers who have an interest in sport voluntarily take on PE classes, exercise etc.
Educational Museum
Cllr Martin Kenny queried if there was any progress on the idea to have an educational museum set up in the Mohill’s old Vocational School. It was discussed that if the new Mens group were to help curate and set up it could be worthwhile as there are no other open museums to Irish education in the country.
