Leitrim VEC propose ammendments to new ETB criteria

Members of Leitrim VEC accept that by the end of this year they will be no more, but they will fight for “fair representation” on the new Educational Training Board (ETB) which includes heavy weights Sligo and Mayo.

Chairperson of Leitrim VEC Damien Brennan told members that he and Acting CEO Martin Fallon met with the Minister for Education and officials from the department before Christmas. He said they put forward the concerns from Leitrim about being amalgamated with two other counties. Mr Brennan said the Minister Quinn was “receptive to the points.”

The legislation for the amalgamations are currently going through Dail Eireann and have been spoken about in Dáil committees, so Leitrim VEC wished to put forward their own proposals to amend the ETB criteria.

Martin Fallon said he understood the new ETBs will have 18 members made up of 10 political representatives, 2 staff, 2 parents and 4 community/ business representatives.

Cllr Mary Bohan outlined the concern for Leitrim was over the criteria that public representative will be picked based on population. She proposed that there should be no population clause and that Leitrim should be allowed three political representative and one parent representative. The members all agreed with these proposals.

Cllr Enda McGloin said that in the Dáil committee recently the population clause was mentioned and the Minister said he would consider the amendment. The VEC members said they would draw up their proposals and send them to local Oireachtas members, Education party spokespeople as well as the Minister for Education Ruairi Quinn.
