Ballyconnell Relief Road opens

The new Ballyconnell Relief Road in Co Cavan was officially opened last Friday, August 31.

The €3.3 million project consists of a 1.3 km single carriageway and links the N87 Belturbet Road to the R205 Ballyconnell to Derrylin Enniskillen Road, removing the significant volumes of HGV traffic from the town centre. The relief road also includes two roundabouts and an expansive new bridge over the Woodford Canal.

Cavan-Monaghan Fianna Fáil TD Brendan Smith said the new stretch should ease congestion problems and improve safety around the town of Ballyconnell.

The construction was contracted to Gibson Bros (Ireland) Ltd, and work commenced on the project in June 2011. The project was funded under the National Development Plan and the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport.
