A spate of graffiti tagging on homes, businesses and signage around Manorhamilton is destroying years of hard work put in by volunteers involved in the local Tidy Towns committee.

In recent weeks vandals have targeted buildings and signage in a graffiti ‘bombing’ campaign of the town, tagging public areas with the letters OSK.

Cllr Sean McSharry, a member of the local Tidy Towns committee, said that the graffiti has caused widespread anger, especially with those who have volunteered their time over the last few years to try and improve the appearance of the town.

“Everyone has worked so hard to tackle problems raised in previous Tidy Town reports in Manorhamilton and this is a real slap in the face for them,” he said.

“We saw such an improvement in our marks this year and now we have vandals destroying signage and property. The really hard thing for people to accept is that those responsible are people living in our area. It’s so juvenile to do this and people are justifiably angry about it.”

The criminal damage has been reported to local gardai who are investigating the matter.
