An unannounced inspection of Sligo Regional Hospital by HIQA (Health Information Quality Authority) was performed in early March of this year.

The areas assessed were the Day Services Unit, the Oncology Day Ward and the Renal Dialysis Unit.

The three clinical areas inspected were found to be clean and well maintained.

In addition, the Orthopaedic Ward, which was inspected during an unannounced inspection by the authority in July 2014, was re-visited to assess the level of progress which had been made after a 2014 inspection.

The report noted that compliance in the national hand hygiene audit at Sligo Regional Hospital at the end of last year was 89.5%.

In relation to key findings identified in the report, Sligo Regional Hospital says it has taken immediate steps to address these findings to reflect the advice and recommendations of HIQA.

Speaking following the report, General Manager Grainne McCann said that the hospital is now revising and amending its Quality Improvement Plan to reflect these findings.

She said: “We will continue to embed and sustain a culture of good hand hygiene practice in every service at all levels.”
