Minister for Health, Leo Varadkar TD, has told the Leitrim Observer that there are no plans to close St Patrick’s Hospital in the wake of the latest HIQA report.

Fears had arisen that the findings of the report, released on Tuesday, July 21, would be used to force the closure of the facility.

In an interview with the Leitrim Observer this morning during his visit to Sligo Regional Hospital, Minister Varadkar said: There are no plans for closure. HIQA as the regulator of course has the power to stop admission and that is something that I don’t have control over. They can do that. Certainly there aren’t any plans to close it until it can be replaced. People do live there and they can’t just be thrown out of their home essentially. So the plan has to be, in the medium term, to replace it with a new unit and that is what we intend to do.”
