Former county librarian celebrates 100th birthday

Former Leitrim County Librarian, Mrs Vera McCarthy, celebrated her 100th birthday on Monday January 10th at Our Lady's Manor, Dalkey, Co. Dublin.

Former Leitrim County Librarian, Mrs Vera McCarthy, celebrated her 100th birthday on Monday January 10th at Our Lady's Manor, Dalkey, Co. Dublin.

She was surrounded by her family and many friends, some of whom travelled from Ballinamore and Leitrim for the occasion.

President Mary McAleese honoured her with a visit on the day to express her personal good wishes.

Mrs McCarthy is the last survivor of ten members of the Carey family from Lawderdale, Fenagh, Co. Leitrim.

With her husband, Michael, who died in 1965, she has four children, Fr Dermot, Mel, Dr Beth (Earley) and Michael, all of whom joined her for the big birthday party.
