A planned SONS (Save our National Schools) march to Dail Eireann in protest to government cuts to national schools, originally scheduled for Saturday, May 26th will now take place on Wednesday July 4th and Thursday July 5th. This was decided after the National Committee meeting of SONS, a steering group set up to campaign against potential closures and cuts to services of rural national schools.

Principal of Aughnasheelin National School and local co-ordinator of SONS in the Leitrim area, Jerome Quinn said: “The date change was decided after a meeting in Athlone on Saturday where the group agreed that the new date would be strategically better, as it coincides with a bill which is being put to the Dail on that date.”

Mr Quinn commented that the lack of nationally co-ordinated response by the INTO to the attack on disadvantaged schools and consequently their members who work in the front line experiencing this discrimination, “adds insult to injury rather than any sense of grateful appreciation for attendance at protests.”

He concluded: “Viable is the word the politicians and the INTO use as they ask rural communities in crisis to consider committing social suicide by shutting down their life support machine which is their national schools. These communities have been deprived of the assistance of this state to leave them sustainable thriving communities since the foundation of the state.”
