Sinn Féin TD Michael Colreavy has called on tourism promotion agencies to intensify their efforts to attract and retain visitors to Leitrim and Sligo.
Speaking during an all-party Oireachtas Committee meeting attended by representatives from Fáilte Ireland and Tourism Ireland, Deputy Colreavy said: “The counties of Sligo and Leitrim enjoy the most wonderful, spectacular, unspoilt scenery in Ireland together with a rich history and culture and a thriving arts community. While we have developed a very good range of tourism products I feel we could do an awful lot more – if we had greater support to develop and market our potential.
“It is great that Sligo has Fleadh Cheoil na hEireann 2014 and 2015; Yeats 2015, and the re-opening of Lissadell House – among many other attractions. Similarly Leitrim has several annual shows that attract thousands of visitors annually. Yet, the only hotel in North Leitrim – the Abbey Manor Hotel in Dromahair lies derelict and unused.”
Deputy Colreavy called on all the tourism promotion agencies to work closely with those whose livelihoods depend on tourism.
He called on all tourism bodies to get involved in the debate surrounding Fracking, and to point out to Government that there will be no tourists in the Northwest if it is ever permitted to destroy our precious landscape.
