EU move on Maternity Leave Directive slammed

Sinn Féin MEP for the Midlands North West Matt Carthy has slammed the decision of the European Commission to withdraw the proposed directive on maternity leave.

Sinn Féin MEP for the Midlands North West Matt Carthy has slammed the decision of the European Commission to withdraw the proposed directive on maternity leave.

McCarthy said, “The proposed Maternity Leave Directive had the potential to provide mothers across Europe with a minimum standard of maternity leave and also contained strong provisions on paternity leave.

“The decision to withdraw this Directive is outrageous given the amount of work still left to do across Ireland and Europe to ensure the equality of women. At a time when the public perception of the EU is arguably at its lowest point, this move does absolutely nothing to reassure those who have lost faith in the ability of the EU to protect and promote the fundamental rights of citizens and the common good of all our people.

“The silence from Fine Gael and Labour MEPs on this issue is deafening although unsurprising given their recent attacks on lone parents.”

McCarthy concluded, “Sinn Féin believes that a fair recovery is possible and we will continue to champion the introduction of policies which place the equality of citizens at their heart.”
