Litter bins can create litter problems according to Leitrim County Council.
Chairperson of the Carrick Municpal Meeting, Sinead Guckian asked the council to reconsider the decision not to install a public litter bin at the new children’s playground in Drumsna.
The council said the decision was taken “on the basis of evidence from elsewhere that litter bins can be a source of littering rather than providing a solution to the problem.” They said the quiet area of the playground could lead to household dumping. The council noted that there are no bins on the main streets of Ballinamore and Leitrim Village and they have no problems with litter.
They said Green Flag education in schools, teach kids to bring home litter. But they did say they would look at moving the bin closer.
