Al Jazzera covers fracking in Leitrim

As we know the debate on fracking is not a local one, the controversial process is being discussed world over. But it was still surprising to see Al Jazeera, Qatar International news channel covering the topic from Co Leitrim this week.

As we know the debate on fracking is not a local one, the controversial process is being discussed world over. But it was still surprising to see Al Jazeera, Qatar International news channel covering the topic from Co Leitrim this week.

The international TV and online news broadcaster sent reporter Simon McGregor-Wood to North Leitrim recently to report on the campaign against fracking here. The report showed idyllic shots of North Leitrim and discussed the risks involved in the extraction process as well as speaking with some local people who are against the process.

“The windswept hills of Ireland are believed to be sitting on a treasure trove of natural gas,” Mr McGregor Wood tells the audience.

“Despite its invasiveness, some say the jobs it will provide are hard to ignore,” the reporter stated.

Al Jazeera is an independent broadcaster which started out as an Arabic TV channel but expanded into an international TV news outlet, following the events after September 2001.

You can see their report at: http://www.aljazeera.com - type Leitrim into the search bar to find the report. The clip which was also posted on the Aljazeera English channel on youtube had over 80 comments from people all over the world this week - the majority were warning against the gas extraction process.
