The Leitrim Adult Educational Guidance and Information Service recently hosted a special Leitrim Learners Conference which took place in The Bush Hotel on Tuesday, February 24 last.

The service was established in 2007 and provides free, impartial and confidential information, advice and guidance to adults in relation to their education, training and career options.

The event was open to all adult learners participating on MSLETB (formerly VEC) courses. Those in attendance, approximately 180 strong, heard from Billy Dixon, Personal Development, Marketing Advisor and Image Consultant. Christy Connelly, Broadcaster, Author and Management Consultant also spoke.

Both men touched on topics such as motivation, confidence and resilience when it comes to getting into the workforce. The event motivated and inspired those in attendance and celebrated the learners and what they have and are continuing to achieve. The evening also gave learners an opportunity to think about their own personal growth and career development.

One of the adult learners who availed of the service was Anne Gilpin. Anne is originally from England but now resides in Keshcarrigan. At 65, Anne was keen to get back to education having left school at 16. Having heard about the Leitrim Adult Educational service through Councillor Sinead Guckian, Anne attended an information night in Carrick-on-Shannon five years ago and enrolled on a FAS course which led her to taking part in a three year course in Creative Design in IT Sligo.

Speaking of her experience, Anne says: “The guys at Leitrim Adult Guidance were extremely helpful to me. They pointed me in the right direction and gave me plenty of encouragement.”

Having completed her course and having attained her qualifications, Anne now uses the skills she has learned to assist in graphic design for various charities in the local area. “Leitrim Adult Guidance guided me through the whole process of applying for the course. I could not be any more grateful to them.”

Working with the Adult Educational Guidance and Information Service are Niamh Brennan and Jane Nolan. Niamh is a Guidance Counsellor who offers one to one and group guidance sessions to assist in finding an individuals skills and goals. She supports those who avail of her services in exploring all of the possibilities for their future and helps in overcoming issues that hold back career development.

Meanwhile, Jane provides up to date, impartial and accurate information to the public about upcoming education and training opportunities.
