Mary Doherty from Drumkeerin has been announced as the Leitrim CarePlus Pharmacy Carer of the Year 2017. A special event was held in Mary’s honour where she was presented with a gift from CarePlus Pharmacy and Family Carers Ireland.

Mary is mum to three daughters. Her daughter, Niamh (12), has Down Syndrome and in May was diagnosed with Leukaemia and is currently undergoing treatment. Mary was working as a full-time nurse but due to Niamh’s treatment she now works one day a week in order to provide care for Niamh.

They travel to Dublin weekly, leaving home at 5 am for treatment. Mary’s nomination says her love for Niamh shines through and her other two daughters are also very understanding of Niamh’s needs.

Noelle Gibbons, Family Carers Ireland Support Officer commented “We are absolutely delighted that Mary has been awarded the title of the Leitrim CarePlus Pharmacy Carer of the Year 2017. Carers play an absolutely vital role in society, and they are at times the forgotten workforce.

“This is the first year that CarePlus Pharmacy have sponsored the event and we are hugely grateful for their support and look forward to working with them for many years to come.”

Mary will now attend the CarePlus Pharmacy Carers of the Year Awards ceremony which will be held in Dublin on Wednesday, November 22. The awards will see broadcasters and patrons of Family Carers Ireland, Mary Kennedy and Marty Whelan, honouring award recipients from across the country.

Niamh Lynch, Commercial Director, CarePlus Pharmacy said “These awards present an important opportunity to celebrate the dedication and support that carers provide to their loved ones every day throughout the year.  CarePlus is committed to improving people’s wellbeing and our relationship with Family Carers Ireland reflects what we stand for as a company.”

One family carer will be chosen as Ireland’s Carer of the Year 2017 at what will be the eleventh annual awards ceremony. This year four regional Young Carers of the Year will be honoured due to the significant increase in nominations for young people providing care in the home.

Family Carers Ireland provides a range of supports and services for family carers through its 22 resource centres nationwide and advocates fairness for carers. 2017 also saw the organisation launch its ‘Share the Care’ campaign to help family carers self-identify and seek supports. www.familycarers.ie / www.careplus.ie.
