Brazen thieves have targeted the newly constructed Leitrim County Enterprise Board building on the Castlecarra Road/Dublin Road Junction in Carrick-on-Shannon.
Some time in the past two weeks, thieves gained access to the site and proceeded to rip copper piping out of the building, causing damage worth about €3,500 in the process.
Luckily the new building has not been fully completed yet and there was no water running through the pipes. If there had been, it is estimated the cost of the damage could have been as high as €50,000.
The amount of piping that was stolen would have taken the thieves between three and four hours to remove. It is believed for all their effort it would only be worth about €200 to them as scrap.
Local people are being urged to keep an eye out for strangers coming into the area and for any unusual or suspicious activity around businesses and houses.
