River Drowse claims first salmon in record time

Once again the River Drowse in Kinlough gained national headlines as it was the spot where the first salmon of the year was caught and it is believed this year's catch may be the quickest ever.

Once again the River Drowse in Kinlough gained national headlines as it was the spot where the first salmon of the year was caught and it is believed this year's catch may be the quickest ever.

This was the 33rd time the first salmon of the year was caught on the River Drowse.

In recent years there has been something of a wait for the first salmon to be landed, but that precedence was turned on its head on Saturday last as Ian Martin, from Dungannon, Co Tyrone claimed an 11 Ib 7oz salmon within 10 minutes of the start of the new fishing season.

Fishing commenced at 8.30am on New Year's morning and by 8.40am, Mr. Martin had secured the coveted first salmon on a one inch Flame Thrower Copper Tube Fly.
