Carrick-on-Shannon Gardai have informed the Leitrim Observer they have “no knowledge” that Larry Murphy is in Leitrim.
Their statement comes after the Gardai have received a number of phone calls inquiring about the convicted criminals’ whereabouts.
Unconfirmed spottings of Larry Murphy have been rife over the past week in Carrick-on-Shannon. The rumour that the rapist and suspected killer is living locally has spread across Facebook and Twitter and seems to be the main talking point for locals in the town.
A spokesperson for Carrick-on-Shannon Gardai said they “doubt the veracity of the rumour” and have no knowledge that he is situated in Carrick.
46 year old Larry Murphy was released from prison after serving ten-and-a-half years of a 15-year jail term for rape and attempted murder in August 2010.
Larry Murphy is on the registered sex offender list and Gardai have to be given notification prior to his movements.
Murphy is regarded as being the prime suspect in the disappearance of a number of young women in the mid to late 1990s in the Leinster area, when Murphy was known to be living in the region. He has not been convicted for these crimes.
Spottings of Larry Murphy are not uncommon and as a result a Facebook page has been set up to track people’s alleged spottings across the country.
Mr Murphy has a distinguishing dimple on his chin. Many spotters online have noted that the man they believe to be Larry Murphy has a full beard.
