56% of county has paid Household Charge

56% of eligible households in the county have paid the Household Charge according to the latest figures released by Leitrim County Council. Cllr Caillian Ellis asked for an update on the payments made in Co Leitrim and also queried exactly how the monies collected are being spent.

Head of Finance at Leitrim County Council, Katrina Murphy pointed out that the Household Charge “is an interim measure and proposals for a full property tax are being considered by the Government.”

“The Exchequer Contribution to the Local Government Fund (LGF) has been replaced by the income from the Household Charge. The LGF Allocation to Leitrim for 2012 is €11,809,261 and this includes Leitrim’s allocation of the Household Charge. The LGF funds the day to day services provided by Leitrim County Council.”
