Local foresters invited to enter 2012 awards

Local foresters are being called to enter the 25th annual Irish Forestry Awards. With a prize fund of €7,000, the Awards recognise and reward those who employ the principles of sustainable forest management on their properties including sound commercial management, environmental protection, bio-diversity and social amenity. Everyone with woodland is encouraged to enter as all woodlands, large or small, are of merit.

All short-listed entries will be visited by the judging panel in the coming months. Having the judges visit the woodlands is one of the great benefits of entering the awards, as they are experienced foresters and can advise in the development of all varieties of woodlands.

There are two awards categories, Farm Forestry and Bio-Diverse Forestry/Woodlands, both of which are based on the need to develop woodlands that can contribute to our economy and, at the same time, support and create habitats for wildlife. Winners in each category will receive €2,000, a perpetual trophy and an RDS silver medal. Each runner–up will receive a cheque for €1,000. The Best New Entrant in each category will also receive €500 and a certificate of merit.

Application forms are available on the RDS website: www.rds.ie/agriculture, via email at forestry@rds.ie or by calling the RDS Agriculture Foundation on 01 240 7215. Closing date for entries is Friday, August 3, 2012.
