Gardai received phone call 24 hours before discovery of murder victim

Sligo Gardai have confirmed that they received a call on Thursday, September 20 via the emergency services number relating to a male being tied up in a house with a brown gate in Sligo Town.

The gardai acted on this information and a member responded to the call and went to the house as described.

In the short statement issued by the Garda Press Office, it was noted that the garda attending “satisfied themselves that there was nothing untoward” at the house.

However 24 hours later Eugene Gillespie was discovered bound and beaten in his home in Sligo Town.

“This phone call is forming part of the Garda investigation into the death of Eugene Gillespie and gardai are liaising with phone companies in efforts to identify the identity of the caller,” noted a spokesperson for the Gardai.

“An Garda Siochana is determined to find the perpetrators of this crime and would once again appeal to anyone with information or who can assist with the investigation to contact the incident room at Sligo Garda Station on 071-9157000, The Garda Confidential Telephone Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.”
