Co Leitrim volunteers are busy planning Gatherings across their communities following Gathering Ireland Community meetings held recently.

Nearly 200 people attended a meeting in Carrick-on-Shannon with dozens of ideas proposed for the County in 2013 from celebrating our historic towns and villages to world record attempts.

Co Leitrim ideas include The Connaught Fleadh which will take place for the first time in Carrick on Shannon.  Festivities will kick off with The Hup Festival which will take place during the week which leads into weekend of the Fleadh.  The festivities organised by Comhaltas Ceoltoiri will consist of enthralling traditional music sessions and competitions with musicians of all ages and instruments of all sizes and will attract international visitors.

The Leitrim Roots Festival will be of great interest to people whose ancestors came from Co. Leitrim or people who were born in Co. Leitrim.   Proposed activities include guided tours to different historic and beautiful areas in the county. There will be lectures on roots-related topics and evenings of traditional entertainment, with Irish music, song and dance.

A reunion of all past pupils of the Presentation Brothers School in Carrick on Shannon who are now living in different parts of the world is also being organised.  The reunion will be from 1945 -1970’s.

Drumsna will honour one if the most respected novelists of the 19th century, Anthony Trollope by hosting a Summer School which will see international Trollope societies from England and America descend on the village to walk in the footsteps of the renowned author.  Born in 1815 Anthony Trollope is considered to be one of the most respected novelists of the Victorian era.

Event organisers across the North West are now working away on their events with the Gathering Ireland 2013 Steering Group in each county offering advice, guidance and practice support to help them realise their ideas.
