Text alert schemes around the county are being hailed as an integral part of garda investigations into crime in rural areas.

Speaking to the Leitrim Observer this week, a spokesperson for Carrick-on-Shannon gardai said that the text alert system had proven to be of great benefit in investigations the county.

“We would encourage people to join their local community text alert scheme. Our experience has been that text alert is evolving into an integral part of our work in tackling crime in rural areas,” he said.

The spokesperson also urged people to remain vigilant and to immediately report any suspicious people, activity or vehicles in their area, to contact either Carrick-on-Shannon Garda Station (071 9650510) or Manorhamilton Garda Station (071 9820620). Both of these stations are manned on a 24 hour basis.

“If you see something that you are not happy with we would ask that you contact us immediately so we can check it out,” he said.

“Don’t be afraid that you will be wasting our time. The text alert has proven very beneficial and we would ask people to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity, no matter how insignificant it may seem, immediately,” he stressed.
