Sligo/North Leitrim TD, Tony McLoughlin, has pledged to “try my very best to represent the people from all of the new Leitrim/Sligo/West Cavan/South Donegal area”.
Speaking following the announcement of the recommendations of the Constituency Commission, Deputy McLoughlin said “For the first time since 2002 Co Leitrim will have the opportunity to vote as one County in a General Election, this is welcome in that many Leitrim people felt the frustration with a small population of been split for electoral purposes.
This is the first time in many years FG has been in Government when a Constituency Commission has reported and I am delighted that the Commission has delivered a positive result for Leitrim.
“The only downside to this proposal is the fact that this constituency will have 4 counties with an area stretching 80 miles by 100 miles, from Ballyconnell to Enniscrone and from Rooskey to outside Donegal town.
“However they have decided to reduce the amount of TDs in the Dail and many people will welcome this on-going commitment by the FG/Lab Government to reduce the cost of Government.
“I want to state that I will now endeavour to familiarise myself with this new area over the coming weeks and months and try my very best to represent the people from all of the new Leitrim/Sligo/West Cavan/South Donegal area,” he concluded.
