DRUMKEERIN'S Parish Priest Very Rev Gerard Alwill has come out publicly to state that he feels the new English translation of the liturgy, which is due to be introduced later this year, "could be disastrous."

Fr Alwill spoke to the Leitrim Observer this week following the conference of the Association of Catholic Priests which received national attention at the weekend.

A variety of changes to the current missal, including changes to prayers such as the Confiteur, The Gloria and The Creed will come into effect this year, but Fr Alwill is one of many priests calling for the introduction to be deferred.

He said he thinks it will effect the elderly and the very young the most, but overall he is "afraid it will turn people off coming to mass."
