At the November Ballinamore Municipal District meeting Cllr Martin Kenny proposed, “that Leitrim County Council carry out some drainage work on section of the yellow river below Pollaness in Aughnasheelin.
“A lot of debris and branches are blocking a short section of the river and in very wet weather it is flooding out on to the road below Martin Conway’s house causing a traffic hazard,” he noted at the meeting.
In response, a spokesperson for the Council stated that the land owners would be consulted and the necessary drainage work would be carried out in due course.
Cllr Kenny also asked when drainage work, scheduled to be done in 2014 on the Ballinamore-Ballyconnell river network, will begin noting “there is a large area of land in constant danger of flooding if this work is not carried out.”
The District Engineer told the meeting that up to 13km of river was planned to be cleaned this year and it will now be done over the winter months.
The sections due for maintenance are the areas last maintained in 2005/2006, consisting of the Tulloscar Ardrum River, Edintinny River, Mough River, Stradermot River, Moher Stream, the Old Yellow River and the Drumkeen River.
