With the centenary of the 1916 Rising fast approaching, Cllr Sean McDermott has proposed that Leitrim County Council adopt Kiltyclogher as a Heritage Village for the County.

Noting that the village was the birthplace of signatory Sean MacDiarmada, Cllr McDermott said: “I think that it would be appropriate as we edge closer to the Centenary celebrations of the Easter Rising,” he said at the July Council meeting.

However the Director of Service, Planning, Community and Economic Development with Leitrim County Council noted that the Heritage Village initiative was part of a promotion run by Failte Ireland which is now closed to further applications.

“However, in light of the approach of 2016, it would be suggested that this proposal should be referred to the 2016 Centenary Committee for consideration and progression,” he said.
