Councillors call for free parking period in Carrick

LEITRIM’S councillors have called for a free parking period to be introduced in Carrick-on-Shannon to encourage more people to come and shop in the town centre.

LEITRIM’S councillors have called for a free parking period to be introduced in Carrick-on-Shannon to encourage more people to come and shop in the town centre.

Cllr John Ward put forward a proposal calling for the introduction of a half an hour of free parking with any period over 30 minutes incurring charges.

Speaking at the recent Council meeting, the Carrick Area councillor said that the present practice of charging immediately for parking was turning people off shopping in the town.

“People are coming into town but because of the charge they are literally parking and running in to a shop and leaving. The charge is putting people off staying and shopping in town and it is something I think should be addressed,” he said.

Cllr Sinead Guckian agreed with the proposal saying that this matter had been raised a number of times at the Council.
