Also in this week’s paper there is the heart-breaking story of the house fire in Boyle which claimed the life of five year old Marie-Keane Connolly.

Elsewhere in the paper there is news that house prices in Leitrim are now 47% cheaper than they were at their peak while there is potential good news for staff of MBNA with the outlook for workers said to be more ‘positive’.

This week’s paper also features the fascinating story of Aughawillan man Pete Flynn who recently retired from his position as groundskeeper with the New York Mets after 50 years.

In sport it was another weekend to remember for Melvin Gaels as they added the Junior A title to the Intermediate Championship they won a week previously. In hurling it proved to be the end of an era as Carrick-on-Shannon’s bid for a 13th successive title came to an end when they were defeated by Manorhamilton. In the other final Gortletteragh defeated Ballinamore by a solitary point.

It was also a special weekend for the Dromahair ladies who claimed the Senior Championship after a two point victory over St Joseph’s. Dromahair’s victory was all the more incredible as they were last year crowned Intermediate champions and in 2009 won the Junior Championship.
