Leitrim County Council has issued a statement following criticism in an Irish Independent article this week of funding set aside for foreign travel expenses by local authorities.

However the statement issued by the Council noted “this provision is to fund the attendance of the Cathaoirleach at events such as the annual Leitrim London Association Dinner Dance in London and the New York Leitrim Society Dinner dance in New York.”

“It is a long-standing tradition whereby Leitrim County Council is invited to attend both Annual Dinner Dances and attendance represents an important opportunity to maintain links with Leitrim people abroad - whether they be recent emigrants or indeed 2nd or 3rd generation Leitrim people - to update them in relation to the progress and development of the County, and to promote the county in terms of an investment opportunity and also in terms of its tourism product,” noted the statement.

The Members of Leitrim County Council do not attend Conferences abroad.
