Music, dancing and fireworks to mark the start of Carrick 400

Following on from our announcement that His Excellency President Michael D. Higgins will be visiting Carrick-on-Shannon on Friday, 15th February 2013 to officially start the Carrick-on-Shannon 400 celebrations we now have an update for the event.

Following on from our announcement that His Excellency President Michael D. Higgins will be visiting Carrick-on-Shannon on Friday, 15th February 2013 to officially start the Carrick-on-Shannon 400 celebrations we now have an update for the event.

It will take place in the Quay area close to the Tourist Office in Carrick on Shannon at 3.00 pm. Everyone is welcome and should be in place, at the Quay area by 2.45pm.

The official opening will performed by President Higgins who will be joined by the choir from Scoil na Maighdine Muire, medieval/traditional musicans Nuada, dancers from the Victoria Walker Dance Group and the Séan Nós ar an tSionann Dance Group, singer and accordion player Sharon Shannon as well as representatives from Leitrim County Council, Carrick-on-Shannon Chamber of Commerce and local dignitaries to officially open the 400th Anniversary celebrations.

President Higgins will present a scroll to John Bredin, Carrick-on-Shannon Historical Society which will inaugurate the time capsule which will record the Carrick-on-Shannon 400 celebrations.

The official opening ceremony is to be followed by a lantern parade with local school children from Carrick-on-Shannon. Then at the Quayside there will be a countdown to the official launching of the celebrations.

This will be followed by a fireworks display on the River Shannon culminating in the lighting of a fire sculpture.
