Calling all ladies who are interested in walking /running! Would you consider volunteering your services to help fundraise for St. Joseph’s Outreach class, which provides education to students with Special Needs in the South Leitrim area?

The Flora Women’s’ Mini Marathon takes place in Dublin on Bank Holiday Monday, June 3 and St. Joseph’s Special School are seeking volunteers who would be willing to take part on their behalf to assist them in their fundraising efforts.

Mohill’s St. Joseph’s Outreach Class is part of St. Joseph’s Special School, Ballytivnan, Sligo. It is based in the old Marian College Building in Mohill and meets the educational needs of seven students with quite complex special needs. From September 2013, there will be six students attending St. Joseph’s Outreach Class, Mohill. These students come from Carrick-on-Shannon, Drumshanbo, Ballinamore, and Rooskey.

Like all schools, St. Joseph’s Special School depends solely on a capitation grant provided by the Department of Education and Skills. This grant is based on the number of students present in the school on September 30th each year. Capitations grants are to pay for all daily running costs of the school such as heating, electricity, telephone costs as well as the provision of teaching materials and equipment.

Unfortunately, in the case of St. Joseph’s School, the Department of Educational and Skills do not take into account that the Outreach Class is in separate building in excess of forty miles from the main school building in Sligo. Therefore as a school they have double the costs for heating, waste disposal, and all maintenance services. With a decreasing number of students they will have a much lower grant available to them in the coming school year.

The Parents Association of St. Joseph’s Outreach Class have decided to take part in the Flora Women’s Mini Marathon and are seeking other volunteers who would be willing to take part and collect sponsorship on behalf of St. Joseph’s School. All monies raised will be used to assist with the overall running costs of the Outreach Class, Mohill. Online entry for the Marathon closes on April 24.

Please see http://www.florawomensminimarathon.ie for information on how to enter. Online entry incurs a registration fee of €19.

St. Joseph’s School would be grateful for any support, if you are interested in taking part, please contact the school on 071-9142453 or stjosephssligo.ias@eircom.net
