Update on N16 progress

Minister for Transport, Leo Vardakar has said that the possibility of funding for developing the N16 is under constraint due to the current financial climate.

Fine Gael Deputy Tony McLoughlin asked the Minister about his recent discussion with his NI Executive Minister counterpart regarding the national primary route N16 linking Sligo and Leitrim to Belfast. He pushed the importance of the route and queried if funding will be forthcoming. Minister Varadkar said his department has been in contact with its counterparts in NI.

Minister Varadkar said,“I would have to note, however, that any funding contribution from TEN-T would be quite limited with the bulk of the funding needing to come from the Exchequer. This does constrain the scope for considering cross border road development projects in the current financial climate.”
