€62,544 for flood mitigation works

Leitrim Village was amongst the worst hit places during the floods that hit the county in November 2009.
Leitrim County Council has been allocated €62,544 in funding under the Flood Mitigation Works and Coastal Protection Scheme.

€45,000 has been allocated for Leitrim Village in order to construct a containment structure with a headwall and a removal weir (including pumps) on the south west side of road. €10,170 has been allocated to Belhavel, Killargue to clear away obstruction up and down stream of the bridge on the R280 and to cut back trees that hang over the river.

And €7,374 has been awarded to Canbeg, Dowra also in order to clear away obstruction up and down stream of the bridge on the L-82281 and cut back trees that hang over the river.

In welcoming this initiative, Senator Michael Comiskey said: ‘We are all too well aware of the damage wreaked on our community network during the winter storms and the harm that flooding has caused. I am delighted to see this significant funding for Co Leitrim.

“This funding will help to lessen flood damage in future and have a very positive effect on the environment.

Fine Gael TD for Sligo/North Leitrim, Tony McLoughlin also welcomed the funding, thanking the new Minister, Simon Harris “who has responded positively to my representations on behalf of Leitrim Co unty Council and landowners effected.”
