Leitrim County Council, in association with Ireland 2016 and the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht are in the process of developing a programme of events to mark the centenary of 1916.

Community Funding is now available for local groups and local cultural and sporting institutions throughout County Leitrim to play their part by developing an event or project to celebrate the centenary.

On April 30th 2015 Leitrim County Council invited anyone with interest in Ireland 2016: Leitrim, to an open meeting in Drumshanbo which was attended by approx 60 people. This meeting generated a wide range of innovative ideas and concepts on how Leitrim should commemorate 1916 with a focus on both Sean Mac Diarmada and Thomas Clarke who have strong connections with Leitrim. As a follow up and as a means to further implement the ideas and concepts received, Leitrim County Council are now seeking applications for funding to help organisations and communities in the development of their projects.

The key objective of the Ireland 2016: Leitrim Grant Scheme is to provide support to local and community event organisers and activities or projects that will contribute to the commemoration of Ireland 2016 in County Leitrim. The Scheme is being administered by Leitrim County Council.

In order to be successful, projects must address one or more of the following five themes: Remembrance, Reconciliation, Imagine, Present or Celebrate. Funding available under the Ireland 2016 – Leitrim Grant Scheme in 2015 is designed to: encourage development of projects on a phased basis that will be implemented in 2016, facilitate development and implementation of remembrance projects throughout the county or aid planning, preparation and promotion of events for 2016. It is anticipated projects will be funded up to a maximum of €5,000. Tourism related projects or events are not eligible for funding under this scheme.
